We are based in Metuchen, so this is home. It is also the trip we run more often than any other, which means the timing on this route is something we know from repetition rather than from a map.
Metuchen is a small borough with a train station at its centre and quiet residential streets around it. The drive into Manhattan is the same Turnpike corridor as Edison next door — about thirty miles, and anywhere from forty-five minutes to well over an hour depending entirely on when you leave.
Being local means pickups here need less notice than most. It does not mean we can beat traffic, and we would rather say so.
A Commuter Town With a Good Station
Metuchen station sits on the Northeast Corridor line, and most people who travel into Manhattan from here regularly already take the train. We are not trying to talk anyone out of that.
What we handle is the trips the train handles badly. Evening events where the last leg home matters. Airport connections with luggage. Family occasions where a group needs to arrive together. Medical appointments. Anything on a Sunday, when the schedule thins out.
Because we are in the borough, short-notice bookings from Metuchen are more often possible than from further out. Call rather than assume.
Which crossing, and what it costs
Metuchen trips run north on the Turnpike and cross via the Lincoln Tunnel for Midtown or the Holland Tunnel for downtown. Hudson crossings are tolled eastbound only, at $16.79 with E-ZPass at peak and $14.79 off peak — peak being weekdays six to ten in the morning and four to eight in the evening, and weekends eleven to nine. Should You Take the Train Instead?
For a weekday commute into New York Penn Station, the train from Metuchen is the better option and most residents already know it. It is cheaper, it is not affected by the tunnel, and the station is walkable from much of the borough.
Where we earn our place is the evening return, the airport run with bags, the group travelling together, the destination nowhere near Penn Station, and the Sunday schedule. If your trip is a straightforward weekday commute, take the train.

Getting into Manhattan is rarely the problem. Getting out at eleven at night, in weather, when everyone else is trying to do the same thing, is where evenings go wrong. Book both legs together and it is already handled.
The rate is fixed when you book.
You approve a flat rate in advance. It does not move because traffic was heavy or because you booked on a busy night. Tolls and parking are added at cost, itemised rather than buried.
