Getting From New Brunswick Into Manhattan
New Brunswick is about thirty-five miles from Midtown, the longest of our central New Jersey origins, and the one where the traffic buffer matters most. A clear run is under an hour. A weekday morning is closer to an hour and a half.
The whole trip is the Turnpike until the tunnel approach, which makes it a straightforward route to plan but an exposed one — more of the journey sits on a single congested corridor than from anywhere closer in.

A University and Hospital Town
New Brunswick generates two distinctive kinds of trip. The Rutgers campuses produce family travel that concentrates heavily around move-in and move-out weekends and graduation, when demand across the whole corridor spikes at once. And the hospital district produces medical travel, where the appointment time is fixed and the return is unpredictable.
Both are better served by a car than by a train, for the same reason: luggage in the first case, and an uncertain finish in the second.
Downtown New Brunswick also has a genuinely good rail station on the Northeast Corridor, which we would rather mention than ignore.
Which crossing, and what it costs
New Brunswick trips run north on the New Jersey Turnpike and cross through the Lincoln Tunnel for Midtown or the Holland Tunnel for downtown. Hudson crossings are tolled eastbound only, at $16.79 with E-ZPass at peak and $14.79 off peak — peak being weekdays six to ten in the morning and four to eight in the evening, and weekends eleven to nine. Should You Take the Train Instead?
The Northeast Corridor line runs from New Brunswick into New York Penn Station and, at rush hour, it is faster than driving. If you are alone, with a bag, heading somewhere near Penn, take the train.
Book a car for move-in and move-out weekends when you are carrying a dorm room's worth of belongings, for medical appointments where you cannot predict the finish, for groups, for late returns, and for destinations nowhere near a station.

Choosing a Vehicle
An executive sedan suits business travel and couples. For Rutgers move-in and move-out, book a full-size SUV or a Sprinter van — these trips involve substantially more than normal travel luggage and the vehicle is almost always the constraint. Groups of seven or more need a Sprinter on a run this long, because splitting across cars reliably produces arrivals twenty minutes apart.

Getting into Manhattan is rarely the problem. Getting out at eleven at night, in weather, when everyone else is trying to do the same thing, is where evenings go wrong. Book both legs together and it is already handled.
